Biography

Mr N. Ramachandran is the Founder President of the Indian Police Foundation and Indian Police Institute, a national level think tank and an all India Professional Institute for Police Officers, based in New Delhi. The Police Foundation and Institute was inaugurated by Shri Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister on the 21st October, 2015.

Mr Ramachandran retired as Director General of Police, Meghalaya after serving the Indian Police Service for 35 years. He belonged to the 1978 batch of IPS and served as Police Superintendents of Nagaon, Guwahati, Kamrup and Darrang Districts, of Assam and as Chief of the Assam State Intelligence, Security and Special Operations and also served as the Assam State DGP for Civil Defence. He did significant work in counter-terrorism, conflict resolution, handling of peace talks, revamping of intelligence, and operations machinery against terrorism and rehabilitation of the victims of terrorism.

Mr Ramachandran served as Chairman of the Cochin Port for six years between 2005 and 2011, where his achievements included implementing some of the largest developmental projects like India’s first International Container Transhipment Terminal, Road and Rail Connectivity projects, The Cochin LNG Terminal and Regasification plant, Port based Special Economic Zones, etc. Apart from significant labour reforms and putting a decisive end to retrograde labour practices, he also successfully implemented a SAP-based ERP, covering all activities of the Port, a pioneering effort, making Cochin the first e-port in the country.

As one of the earliest founding members of the elite Special Protection Group, in charge of the Prime Minister’s Security Detail, Mr Ramachandran served the organisation for nearly 14 years in two stints, and contributed significantly to its nurturing as an organisation of excellence with a zero-error culture. He functioned in all operational capacities of Close Protection and as IGP operations and managed security of eight successive Indian Prime Ministers.

He did his MA (Public Administration), LLB, and the Leadership Programme of Harvard University Kennedy School. He has been trained in security in many security training schools across the world. He also underwent the Harvard University Kennedy School Programme for Senior Executives in National and International Security.

He is also a recipient of the Indian Police Medal for Gallantry from the President of India.
